From painted plaster to fully tiled

An older concrete pool and spa taken from a failing painted interior to a two-tone tiled finish, with new spa seating and sandstone coping.

Tile is only as reliable as what is under it.

Painted pool to tiled pool

Rebuilding the finish, not covering the problems

The original pool had a painted plaster interior with hollow and cracking render underneath. Waterline tile was starting to release, the old coping was cracking, and the whole thing had reached the point where patching was throwing money at it.

The failed material came off so the shell could be judged and prepared for a permanent submerged tile system. That meant repairing the interior, preparing and waterproofing, and dealing with the fittings before any tile.

On an older shell that means the render, the cracks, the fittings, waterproofing compatibility and immersion-rated adhesive — none of which is visible in the finished photographs.

A long-standing Westside project

Part of our pool tiling history

This is one of the earlier sets in our archive. Fewer photographs than a recent job, but it records something worth recording: converting old painted concrete pools to tile is not a service we added last year.

Our own crews do the tiling rather than passing it to a subcontractor. On a job that involves hollow render, rust and fittings, that continuity is the difference between one person owning the result and three people each owning a quarter of it.

For anyone in Silver Lake weighing a tiled renovation: the surface is the visible quarter of it. What it costs and how long it lasts are decided by preparation, immersion-rated materials and set-out.

What went into the job

  • Painted plaster and hollow render removed
  • Shell repaired, prepared and waterproofed
  • Fittings dealt with before any tile
  • Light blue ceramic laid through the interior
  • Darker blue at the waterline, steps and spa seat
  • New spa seating and sandstone coping

The result

A two-tone tiled pool and spa on a shell that was made sound first, with the edge changes marked in a darker tile so you can read them from the water.

This week on the job

Straight from the truck

Short clips from real visits. Nothing staged, nothing bought from a stock library.

  • Setting mosaic tile along the waterline by hand
  • Draining a pool and scrubbing the plaster back to clean
  • A swamp-green pool drained and washed back to bright
  • The crew troweling fresh plaster across an empty shell

Came home from a two-week vacation and our pool was basically green. The previous company told us we needed to drain it, which sounded crazy. Pool Care LA came out, tested everything, explained what was happening and started the cleanup. Took a little time but now the water looks better than it has in years.Read in full

We had another pool company for almost five years and slowly the service got worse. They would say they came but the pool was always dirty. Jake from Pool Care LA has been completely different. He actually checks the equipment and lets us know if something needs attention.Read in full

Our pump stopped working on a Friday afternoon and we were worried because we had family coming over that weekend. Robert came out, found the problem and got everything running again. Honest guy, and he explained everything before doing the repair.Read in full

I don't usually leave reviews but these guys deserve it. My pool was a mess and I was tired of trying to fix the chemicals myself. They came out and took care of everything. Water is clear now and I don't have to worry anymore.Read in full

Bought a house in Beverly Hills with an older pool and honestly had no idea how to maintain it. The equipment was old and everything was confusing. They walked me through what needed to be done first and what could wait. No pressure. That was appreciated.Read in full

We thought we needed a completely new pool system. Turns out it was just a few issues with the pump and filter. They saved us a lot of money by fixing what actually needed fixing.
