The short answer. A green pool comes back in days, not weeks — for most pools, swimmers are back in the water in about two days. And we do it without draining the pool. The water stays where it is; the algae is killed in it and then filtered out of it.
That second part matters more in Los Angeles than people expect. The weight of the water is what holds a pool shell down against groundwater, and bare plaster left drying in the sun crazes and cracks. Draining is a last resort here, not a first move. Why we do not drain a green pool.
How green is it? The shade tells you the job
People talk about a green pool as if there were one kind. There are roughly three, and they are three different amounts of time and money.
Hazy, faintly green, bottom still visible
Chlorine dropped in the last few days and algae has just started. Usually one shock cycle and a filter clean. This is the cheapest version of the problem by a wide margin.
Solid green, bottom visible but blurred
A full bloom: free chlorine at or near zero, algae on the walls and floor as well as in the water. The common case, and the one the two-day process is built around.
Dark or swamp green, no bottom at all
Weeks or months of neglect, usually with leaves and silt under water you cannot see. Expect more than one shock and more filter cleaning — and honest talk about the floor, which sometimes turns out to be stained once the water clears. That is where an acid wash enters the conversation.
Cannot see the bottom at all? Do not let anyone in the water to find out. An opaque pool is a drowning hazard, not just an ugly one.
What to do right now, before anyone arrives
None of this costs anything, and all of it makes the recovery shorter.
- Do not swim in it
Water green enough to see is water with no working sanitiser, so bacteria are unchecked too. And you cannot see the bottom, the drain or a person in trouble.
- Leave the pump running
Water that moves can be treated; stagnant water is how this started. Run circulation continuously rather than on the summer timer. The exception: if filter pressure has climbed far above its normal reading or the pump is whining and losing prime, shut it off and tell us — running a pump against a blocked filter turns a green pool into a pump replacement.
- Do not drain it
It feels like the decisive fix and it is usually the expensive one. See below.
- Skim what floats, leave what has sunk
Netting the surface helps. Do not vacuum a floor you cannot see — you will stir silt into suspension and push it into a filter that is about to be overwhelmed anyway.
- Do not empty a bucket of shock in at midday
Unstabilised chlorine burns off fast in direct Los Angeles sun. Shock added at noon is largely gone before it works, which is why the professional version of that step happens at dusk.
Why pools turn green in the first place
Algae grows from spores, and spores arrive whether you like it or not — on the wind, in rain, on a swimsuit that was in another pool last week. That part is not preventable. What decides whether they take hold is what they land in:
- Stagnant water
A pump that is off, on too short a schedule, or has failed without anyone noticing. Spores the filter would have caught simply sit.
- Low chlorine
A hot week, a party, or a chlorinator that ran empty.
- pH nobody adjusted
Chlorine that is present but ineffective is the quiet version of no chlorine at all. It is why pools go green with a full chlorine bottle standing next to them.
Nearly every green pool is one of four stories: a holiday, a vacant house, a failed pump nobody heard, or a service that quietly stopped coming. Heavy tree cover in the Foothill communities makes all four worse — leaf litter feeds algae and eats chlorine at the same time.
The green-to-clean process, step by step
Each step exists because the one before it cannot do the job alone. Skipping any of them is how a pool goes green again a fortnight later.

Remove the debris
Leaves and twigs come out first. Organic debris consumes chlorine directly, so shocking a pool with a floor full of leaves means paying for chemicals to dissolve leaves instead of killing algae.

Test and correct the chemistry
The full panel, not just chlorine. pH is set before anything else happens, because the same dose of chlorine does several times the work at the right pH.

Brush the walls and floor
Algae anchors to the plaster, and a clinging film shrugs off chemicals that would kill the same organism in suspension. Brushing lifts it into the water where the chlorine can reach it and the filter can remove it.

Shock the pool — more than once if needed
The step that kills the bloom. A large or badly overrun pool takes multiple shocks: the first is largely consumed by the sheer volume of organic material, and only the second or third gets ahead of it.

Algaecide
Kills what survived and makes it harder for the next spores to establish while the chlorine is still settling down.

Clean the filter — typically two or three times
The step nobody outside the trade expects, and the one that separates two days from two weeks. Dead algae does not disappear; it goes into the filter, and a loaded filter stops passing water, which stops the clearing. So the filter comes out and is washed repeatedly during the process, generally two to three times, until water runs clear through it. More on filter cleaning.

Why we do not drain a green pool
Draining looks decisive: take the green water away, put clean water in. In Los Angeles it is the option with the most ways to go badly wrong.
- An empty shell can move
Water weight is what holds a pool down. Take it out and groundwater pressure underneath has nothing working against it. On a saturated lot, a hillside property with subsurface seepage, or any time after sustained rain, an empty pool can lift and crack. That is a structural bill, not a cleaning one.
- Plaster is not meant to be dry
A plaster finish left in open sun crazes and cracks. A shell that stands empty for days while someone schedules the next step comes back worse than it went in.
- The algae does not leave with the water
Spores sit in the pores of the surface. Refill without treating the surface and you have paid for twenty-odd thousand gallons to be exactly where you started.
- The water has to go somewhere legal
Pool water in Los Angeles belongs in the sanitary sewer through a clean-out, dechlorinated first — not in the street and not down a storm drain. Draining is a job with rules, not a hose on a kerb.
When green to clean is not the right answer
- The water clears but the surface stays stained
Algae that sat for months roots into the plaster and leaves a shadow after it is killed. Clean water over a blotched floor is a cosmetic problem, and the fix is an acid wash.
- Black algae in the pores
It has a protective layer and grows down into the surface. Badly established black algae usually needs the surface itself dealt with.
- The pool stood empty or unused for years
Plaster, tile line and equipment all need assessing before anyone talks about water. A drain and clean is often the sensible starting point.
- The pump or filter has failed
There is no chemical route to clear water without circulation. The equipment gets fixed first — in that order, or the recovery does not hold.
What a green pool recovery costs
It is quoted on the pool, and a firm number given without seeing it is a guess. What the number depends on is no secret: how far gone the water is, which sets the number of shock cycles and filter cleans; volume, because chemical demand scales with gallons; what is on the floor under the green; and whether the equipment works, because a dead pump is a separate repair that comes first.

Questions people ask about green pools
What is the fastest way to clear a green pool?
Balance the pH first, brush the walls and floor, then shock the water heavily — at dusk, so the sun does not destroy the chlorine before it works — and run the filter continuously afterwards, cleaning it as often as it loads up. The order is what makes it fast. Shocking before the pH is corrected wastes most of the chemical, and shocking without brushing leaves algae clinging to plaster where chlorine cannot reach it. Done properly, most pools are swimmable in about two days.
Can a green pool be cleaned, or does it have to be drained?
It can almost always be cleaned with the water still in it, and we do not drain pools for algae. Draining risks the shell, dries out the plaster, does not remove the spores sitting in the surface anyway, and leaves you paying to refill and rebalance thousands of gallons. The exception is a pool whose surface is stained or that has stood unused for years — then the right job is an acid wash, also called a drain and clean, which is a deliberate decision rather than a shortcut.
Is it okay to swim in a pool with green algae?
No. The algae is not the main hazard — the conditions that produced it are. Water green enough to see has no effective sanitiser, so bacteria are unchecked; skin, ear and stomach infections are the usual result. The bigger risk is simpler: if you cannot see the bottom, you cannot see the steps, the depth change or a person in trouble. Keep everyone, including pets, out until the water is clear and tested.
Does baking soda clear green pool water?
No. Baking soda raises total alkalinity, which is a useful supporting step because stable alkalinity stops pH swinging — but it kills nothing. It is often confused with soda ash, which raises pH, and with chlorine shock, which is what actually destroys algae. Added to a green pool it typically changes the colour not at all, and can push pH high enough to make your chlorine less effective. Balance first, then shock.
How do I get rid of a green tinge in my pool?
A faint tinge with the bottom still visible is early algae, and the cheapest moment to act. Test free chlorine — it is usually near zero — correct the pH, brush the walls, shock in the evening and run the filter overnight. If the tinge returns within days, something is causing it: a short pump schedule, an empty chlorinator, a salt cell that has stopped producing, or stabiliser so high the chlorine is locked up. A green tinge that keeps coming back is an equipment or chemistry problem wearing a costume.
