Re-tiling an older Hollywood Hills pool
A good original shape is worth keeping. What needed replacing here was the interior, not the pool.
This pool already had a strong freeform shape, an integrated spa and well-defined steps. The old blue interior was what made it read as dated and heavy — a color from a different decade sitting on a shape that had aged perfectly well.
Retiling is not laying new tile over old. What lasts depends on the condition and the accuracy of the surface underneath, so the old tile comes off and the shell gets brought flat before anything new is bedded.
White ceramic is unforgiving in a useful way: it makes the workmanship inspectable. Straight lines have to stay straight, curves have to flow, and the joints have to hold their spacing.
In the Hollywood Hills the pool usually sits in full view of the house, often on a slope where it is looked down on rather than across. That view is exactly the one that shows a bad set-out.
In a white tiled pool, every curve, step and junction is part of the design.
