Pool tiling

Pool tiling in the Westside

Hollywood Hills down to Silver Lake. A fully tiled interior is the most requested finish here, and always for the same two reasons: it lasts, and it keeps looking new.

The Westside's pool tilers

A pool interior meant to outlast you

  • Experienced pool tilers, not general tilers who also do pools.
  • Concrete swimming pools only — that is the whole of what we do.
  • Fully tiled pool and spa renovations.
  • Waterline tile installation on rendered and painted interiors.
  • Pool tile repairs where a repair still buys you years.
  • Members of R R Pools

Our training came from one of the most sought-after pool tilers in California, and from growing up with a father respected in the trade. His rule was simple: tile every pool as if it belonged to you.

If the shell is concrete, the answer is yes — whatever is on it now, the preparation to tile it can be done. See how we tile pools across Los Angeles, or look at high-end fully tiled pools.

This week on the job

Straight from the truck

Short clips from real visits. Nothing staged, nothing bought from a stock library.

  • Setting mosaic tile along the waterline by hand
  • Draining a pool and scrubbing the plaster back to clean
  • A swamp-green pool drained and washed back to bright
  • The crew troweling fresh plaster across an empty shell

What we are asked for on this side of town

Three jobs cover almost every call

Whatever is on the shell now — paint, render, pebble or old tile — the preparation decides how long the new finish lasts.

  • A white tiled pool and spa in front of a villa

    Fully tiled interiors

Pool, spa, steps and ledges tiled as one. Nothing to repaint and nothing to resurface later.

    Fully tiled pools

  • White tile being laid around the spa wall and the pool edge

    Waterline tiling

A darker band around the top defines the edge and keeps the coffee-mug stain off a rendered interior.

    Pool tiling

  • An old pool and spa interior before retiling

Tile repairs, where they still help

Loose tile usually means something behind it. A repair can delay a full renovation, and we keep spares from old jobs to match.

How long do pool tiles last?

Why tile keeps being the answer here

Ceramic and porcelain have lined pools since the Roman Empire, and the reasons have not changed much.

  • Long-term durability. Fully tiled pools have a reputation for lifespans past thirty years when they are installed and maintained properly.
  • Premium appearance. Porcelain and ceramic stay one of the most desirable pool interiors available, and they do not fade into blotches.
  • Easier to keep clean. A low-absorbency surface resists the staining and discoloration you see on rendered interiors.
  • Installation decides all of it. The life of a tiled pool depends on preparation. Choosing the tiler matters as much as choosing the tile.

Questions people ask about pool tiling

Does a pool need tiles around it?

Waterline tiles are recommended around the top of every pool, because of what we call the coffee-mug effect. The water changes its chemical balance constantly and leaves a stain at the top of the wall, and floating dirt and leaves stick to an absorbent rendered surface. Ceramic and porcelain reduce that a great deal, so the pool looks newer for longer and needs cleaning less often.

How long do swimming pool tiles last?

Fully tiled pools have a reputation for lifespans in excess of thirty years. We have renovated a great many pools over the years, and only a couple of times have we ever had to retile one that was already fully tiled. That is the fairest test of it we know.

Can my pool tiles be repaired?

Sometimes, and a repair can delay a full renovation. But loose tile is usually a sign of something bigger behind it, so a repair buys time rather than solving the cause. We keep a collection of tiles from jobs over the years, so if you have no spares left, send us a photo and we will see whether we can match it.

Can my pool be tiled at all?

If you have a concrete pool shell, yes. Whatever the current surface is — paint, render, pebble or old tile — the preparation needed to tile it can be done. Tiles can go around the top at the waterline only, or the whole interior can be fully tiled.
