How many lights does a pool need?
One well-placed light is often enough
- Length, shape, depth, steps and benches decide the count — not fashion.
- Pale interiors reflect more light, so the same fitting reads brighter.
- Dark interiors absorb it, which makes the placement matter far more.
- We aim lights away from the house, the windows and the seating area.
- The result you want is the pool glowing, not the light in your eyes.
- Steps, ledges and odd shapes still have to be visible after dark.
Surface-mounted retro-fit fittings are the usual answer during a renovation, because the existing conduit can normally be reused. Where the original position glares or leaves half the pool dark, a new conduit can be core drilled from the top of the pool and down the wall.
Transformers and cabling are replaced where the run allows it. Older hardwired equipment has to be disconnected by an electrician before anything is converted to a modern 12V setup. Text us a photo of the light and we can usually name the fitting from it.

Light in our pool is original to the last remodel, probably early 2000s. We're just off Ventura near Tujunga and honestly never thought about it until it went out one evening. 😅 Didn't realize how much we use the pool after dark until it was suddenly pitch black out there. Called and they came out the same week, figured out the issue quickly, replaced the bulb and gasket and checked the niche seal. We built the house in 2007 and the pool lights are original to the build. We're on Saltair, just off San Vicente. One of the two fixtures had been flickering on and off for almost a year and I kept not dealing with it. Pool Care LA came out for a regular service visit and I asked about switching to LED. The tech walked me through the options without pushing anything. Different fixture types, color-changing versus fixed white, what the cost difference was, what the actual energy savings would look like over time. I went with color-changing LED for both niches. Installation was clean. They checked the wiring and the transformer as part of the job. Walked me through the controls before leaving. The pool at night looks completely different now. We're off Lost Hills, near the Commons. Pool is from 2001 and has three underwater lights. Two kept flickering and going dim and I thought it was just the bulbs. Turns out the transformer was overloaded and two fixtures had water getting into the housing. They replaced both fixtures, fixed the load issue and now all three run perfectly. We're over near Fallbrook, just off the 101. Pool is from 1996 and the light fixture is original to the build. The thing kept tripping the GFCI breaker and I was just walking out and resetting it without really thinking about why. After a few months of that I finally called. The tech told me right away that a GFCI tripping consistently is not something to keep resetting, it's telling you there is a fault somewhere. He came out and pulled the fixture. The gasket had failed and water was getting into the housing. He pointed out the staining around the niche that I had been chalking up to normal pool splashing. They replaced the fixture with a new LED unit that fit the existing niche, checked the wiring back to the panel and confirmed the GFCI was working correctly. Light hasn't tripped once since. Turns out the breaker was doing exactly what it was supposed to do the whole time. Glad I stopped ignoring it when I did.Read in fullCollapse

Questions about pool lights and transformers
Can a new LED light be installed in an existing pool?
Yes. During a concrete pool renovation a surface-mounted replacement normally goes into the lighting conduit that is already there. Where a new position is wanted, a fresh conduit can often be core drilled from the top of the pool and down the wall.
What about older 240V pool-light systems?
Some older pools ran 240V cable to an assembly with the transformer built into or behind the underwater unit. Do not remove or alter one of those yourself. An electrician is required to disconnect it and make the installation safe.
Why are modern pool lights normally 12V?
A transformer drops the household supply to the voltage the light needs. Older systems use 36V, 32V, 24V or 22V, while most modern LED pool lights run on 12V. The transformer and the light have to be matched, which is why the existing one gets checked before anything is ordered.
Single-color, tri-color or multi-color?
Single-color is one steady pre-selected color. Tri-color gives a choice of three. Multi-color adds automatic transition shows, and with a controller you get remote on and off, color, brightness and separate pool and spa operation. Some systems add app control, depending on the equipment fitted.
How many lights does my pool need?
It depends on length, shape, depth, steps, benches and how reflective the interior is. For many ordinary pools one well-centered modern LED is enough, as long as it clearly lights the steps and the swimming area. Dark interiors absorb light, so placement matters more there than the count does.
Where should the lights face?
Away from the house, the windows and the main entertaining area. A modern LED is very bright looked at directly, and the result you are after is the pool glowing rather than the fitting itself. Steps, seating ledges and unusual shapes are worked around so they stay visible.
