Salt System & Salt Cell Repair in Los Angeles

A salt pool that has gone cloudy is usually a scaled cell, a bad salt reading or a cell at the end of its life — three very different bills.

The thing most salt-pool owners were never told: a saltwater pool is a chlorine pool. Salt sanitises nothing. A salt cell passes a current through lightly salted water and makes chlorine right there in the plumbing; that chlorine does exactly what chlorine from a bucket does, then reverts to salt and the loop runs again. You bought a small factory that makes the chlorine for you.

So “no chlorine in a salt pool” is never a chemistry problem first. A machine has stopped producing — and three different faults look identical from the deck. How salt and chlorine pools really differ.

Start with what the pool is doing

The symptom narrows the fault faster than guessing at the panel.

No chlorine, salt reads normal

Nothing is used up. The cell is scaled, starved of flow, switched off by a failed sensor, or worn out. Four causes, four prices. In winter it may be neither — most cells stop producing below the high fifties.

Panel says Low Salt, the test disagrees

Most systems never measure salt — they infer it from how easily current crosses the cell. Scale, cold water and a tired cell all read as low salt.

Check Cell, or a service light

A real code, worth reading: scale, low flow, a corroded cable, or a cell at the end of its plate life. It narrows things; it does not name the part.

The cell is packed with white crust

Calcium scale bridging the plates. It blocks output, skews the salt reading, and left long enough takes the plate coating with it.

Cloudy or faintly green salt water

Production has been under demand, or stabiliser has climbed high enough to lock what is made. Neither is fixed by salt. Why water goes cloudy.

The cell comes out and gets looked down. Scale is visible: white, chalky, bridging the gaps. The smallest. A clean, plus fixing the chemistry that scaled it.

An independent salt test disagrees with the panel. Flow switch, sensor, cable and connections get checked first. The middle. A flow switch or cable is a modest part; a board is not. Either way the cell may have years left.

Cell clean, salt and flow correct, connections sound — and output still low. Age, not a fault. The largest. The most expensive routine item on a salt pool — which is why the other two get ruled out first.

Sold a cell without the first two checks, you may be paying for a part that was working.

How long a salt cell lasts

A cell is a wear part, rated in running hours rather than years — which is why two identical cells can be four years apart. The published spread says more than any single figure:

Why Los Angeles is hard on cells

Salt chlorination is not regional. The water you top up with is.

  • Hard fill water

    Calcium arrives with every top-up and never leaves — only water evaporates. Hardness climbs all summer.

  • Salt cells push pH up

    Making chlorine this way raises pH by itself. High pH plus high calcium is the recipe for scale, and the cell is where it lands first.

  • Sun that never lets up

    Ultraviolet burns chlorine off faster than the cell replaces it, so owners raise output — and a cell run harder wears out sooner.

So a salt pool without weekly attention is not the low-maintenance pool it was sold as. The chemistry that kills the cell is invisible — the water looks perfect throughout.

The two numbers

Salt and stabiliser decide most of it

Salt. Cells want a narrow band — broadly 2,700–3,500 ppm depending on the maker, with the target printed on the unit. Below it, output falls. Above it, the water is harder on stone coping and metal fittings. Salt leaves only in splash-out, backwash and overflow, so it needs topping up far less often than people assume.

Stabiliser. Cyanuric acid shields chlorine from the sun, and salt systems want more of it than a tablet-fed pool — commonly 60–80 ppm. Too little and the cell cannot keep up in July. Too much and the chlorine shows on the test while doing little in the water.

What a salt system call involves

A fixed order, so cheap causes are ruled out before the expensive one is proposed.

  1. Test the water independently of the panel

    Salt, pH, alkalinity, calcium hardness, cyanuric acid and chlorine — the panel we run on every weekly visit. Panel and test disagreeing is itself the first clue.

  2. Check the cell is getting what it needs

    Run hours, filter condition, flow switch, air in the plumbing. A cell cannot make chlorine in still water, so filter cleaning and pump repair settle many “dead” systems.

  3. Pull and inspect the cell

    Scale cleaned off, plates examined for wear, unions and O-rings checked, cable and connectors checked for corrosion.

  4. Test the electronics

    Power supply, board, temperature sensor and any automation driving it — a healthy system is sometimes just switched off by a forgotten schedule. Automation repair.

  5. Then price a repair or a replacement

Questions people ask about salt systems

How much does it cost to replace a salt cell in a pool?

Published figures in August 2026 ran from roughly $300 to $1,100 for the cell, depending on gallons and brand; Leslie’s lists a 40,000-gallon cell at $1,099. Fitting it is a short job — the expense is the part. Confirm the cell is finished, not scaled or wrongly reported, before spending it.

How often do salt cells need to be replaced?

No fixed interval — cells wear by running hours, not by calendar. Published expectations run from one to three years at the pessimistic end to about five for a well-kept cell. What shortens it here is scale from hard top-up water, high output, and pH left to drift.

How can I tell if a salt cell needs replacing?

By elimination, in order: clean off scale; confirm salt with a real test rather than the panel; confirm the pump runs long enough and the flow switch works; check cable and connectors. Output still low after all that means the plate coating is spent.

Why does my system say low salt when the salt level is fine?

Because most systems do not measure salt directly — they measure how easily current crosses the cell. Anything impeding it reads as low salt: scale, an ageing cell, cold water, a poor connection. Adding salt on that message is how pools end up over-salted, which is its own problem.

Are saltwater pools legal in California?

Yes, and they are common across Los Angeles. The confusion comes from draining, not owning: pool water is a regulated discharge here, and salt water is harder on landscaping and drainage than fresh. What is the downside to a saltwater pool?

The equipment, not the water. You trade buying chlorine for owning a chlorine machine — a cell that wears out, a board that can fail, a habit of pushing pH up. Salt is also harder on natural stone coping and some metal fittings. The full comparison.

How often should a saltwater pool be serviced?

Weekly, like any pool here, but for an extra reason: the visit also protects the cell, because pH and calcium hardness left alone for a fortnight are what scales the plates.
