Glendale is several different pool towns in one city, joined by a single water supply.
Down on the flats around Adams Hill and Brand, pools sit in level yards in full sun with the equipment on a side slab. Up in Chevy Chase Canyon and along the Verdugo slopes the ground tilts, pads end up below the pool on longer pipe runs, and oaks and pepper trees hang over the water. The two ends of 91206 need different visits: one is a sun and chemistry problem, the other debris and plumbing.
What every Glendale pool has in common is what comes out of the hose. The fill water here is hard, and a pool is a machine for concentrating it: water evaporates all year, minerals stay behind, and the top-up adds more. You see the result at the tile line first and inside the equipment second.
What hard water does to a Glendale pool
Four things, in the order most owners meet them.
- A grey-white band along the tile
Calcium scale sets at the waterline, where evaporation is fastest. Brushing keeps it from spreading; once hardened it will not come off that way. It needs a proper tile clean — and where it has crept onto the plaster, an acid wash.
- Salt cells that quietly stop producing
Calcium plates onto the cell blades, output falls, and the controller reports low salt. Adding salt to a scaled cell fixes nothing and pushes the water further out of balance. Cells are wear parts and they scale faster in hard water — cleaning or replacing one is its own job, not a chemical.
- Calcium hardness that only ever climbs
No chemical lowers it. The only lever is dilution, and dilution means refilling with the same hard water, so the level creeps back. It is why draining comes up more often in Glendale than elsewhere — and why it should be a decision rather than a reflex, since an empty shell carries its own risks.
- Heaters and filters furring up from the inside
Hard water plus heat leaves deposits in the heat exchanger, flow drops, and the heater starts tripping its high limit or short-cycling. The same minerals stiffen filter media. Both look like failures and are usually scale.

Weekly maintenance
Full chemical panel including calcium hardness and salt — the two readings that matter most here — plus net, vacuum, tile and wall brushing, baskets, and every piece of equipment inspected.
Acid wash
For scale and staining that has gone past the tile onto the plaster. The pool is drained and the surface taken back with acid and water at 50/50, provided the finish has at least half an inch to spare.
Equipment repair
Salt generators, heaters, pumps, filters, plumbing, electrical components, automation and lights. On the canyon lots the fault is often in the run between pool and pad rather than on the pad itself.
Green to clean
Common on the shaded Verdugo lots and after a salt cell has been failing unnoticed. No draining, filter cleaned two or three times through the process, back in the water in about two days.
New plaster start-up
Where hard water matters most, because the fill decides the first month. Seven days of daily attention, calcium hardness held at 200–400 ppm, pH 7.2–7.6, alkalinity 80–120, and no salt added for twenty-eight days.
Which day the route is on your street
A route is one day, one loop, chemicals and spare parts for those pools already on the truck. Glendale is large enough, and split enough by terrain, that the useful question is not whether we cover the city but which day we are on your street.

Not once a season. Scale is a slow problem and it is only cheap to fix early.

A green pool or a scaled tile line is a separate job; weekly service starts once the pool is in a state worth keeping.

Questions from Glendale owners
Why does the tile line go white again a few months after it was cleaned?
Because the fill water keeps supplying calcium and evaporation keeps concentrating it at the surface. Cleaning removes the deposit; it does not change the water. Holding pH and alkalinity in range slows the return, and weekly brushing along the waterline does more than any product sold for the job.
My salt system says to add salt, but I added salt last month.
A cell coated in calcium produces less chlorine, and many controllers read that as low salt. Adding more salt then leaves the water over-salted with the same weak output. The cell needs inspecting and cleaning — or replacing, if it has reached the end of its life. That is a repair, not a chemical adjustment.
We were told to drain and refill to bring the calcium down. Is that right?
Partly. Dilution is the only way to lower calcium hardness, but a full drain is not automatically how to do it: an empty shell carries real risk, the refill is hard water again, and the number starts climbing from day one. Worth doing when the readings justify it, and worth planning around the plaster when you do.
Does a salt pool cost more to run in Glendale?
