Pool Automation Repair in Los Angeles
Valves not turning, heater not responding, schedules drifting, app offline. Many of these we can diagnose remotely before anyone drives out.
The short answer. When automation misbehaves, the fault is nearly always in one of five places: power to the panel, a relay, a valve actuator, a sensor, or the link between the panel and your phone. Only the last one is a Wi‑Fi problem — and it is the one people assume it always is.
That distinction decides what it costs you. An automation system reports on itself, so a technician can often log in and clear a programming or connection fault remotely, saving you the visit. A seized actuator or a burnt relay is different: someone has to open the load centre. Find your symptom below.
Start with what the pool is actually doing
Six complaints cover almost every automation call, and they do not all need a truck.
The panel is dead or frozen
No display, or a screen that lights up and ignores the buttons. Usually the power supply, the transformer or the main board — not the pool.

Water goes to the pool when you ask for the spa. The actuator on the valve is a small geared motor, and it wears out long before the valve.

The schedule has drifted
The pump runs at three in the morning, or the cleaner never starts. Often nothing is broken: the clock lost time in a power cut, or the programme never came off winter hours.

The panel works at the pad but the phone shows the system offline. Most often that is the house network, the antenna module or a changed password.

Spa mode starts but the water never heats, or the pool drains into the spa. Usually two actuators that should move together and no longer do.

The part of automation repair most people do not know exists. If your system is online, a technician can troubleshoot it remotely instead of booking a call-out:
- Devices that will not switch from the app
Circuits renamed, disabled, or pointed at the wrong relay.
- Schedules and run times
Including the daylight saving shift that leaves half of Los Angeles circulating at the wrong hours.
- Spa and heat modes behaving oddly
Set points, freeze protection and priority rules interact. One wrong setting looks exactly like a broken heater.
- Reading what the system reports
Temperature, salt level and chlorine output all come back through the panel. A number that has quietly gone wrong is a repair you have not had yet.

How a pool automation system is put together
Five parts, in plain language. Knowing which is which turns “the pool is broken” into a question we can answer by phone.

The load centre
A grey box near the equipment with the brains inside. It replaces the old row of time clocks and the walk out to open a valve by hand.

Relays
Electrical switches, one per device: pump, cleaner, lights, blower. When one item stops responding and the rest is fine, a relay is the first suspect.

Valve actuators
Small motors on top of the diverter valves. They are what sends water to the spa instead of the pool.

Sensors
Temperature probes in the plumbing and the air, plus what the salt cell reports. The system decides on these numbers, so a drifting sensor causes odd behaviour everywhere.

The connection
An antenna or network module that puts the panel on your home network so the app can reach it — the newest part of most systems, and the least mechanical in how it fails.

Repairing an old panel, or replacing it
Plenty of Los Angeles pools still run panels fitted a decade or two ago, and they are worth keeping while the boards are sound. Repair is the right answer when one relay, actuator or sensor has failed on a system that otherwise does what you want. Replacement is the honest recommendation when the main board is gone, or the fault list is long enough that you would pay for the same diagnosis twice.

Questions people ask about pool automation
How do I get my AquaLink back online?
Power the panel down at the breaker, wait a few seconds and bring it back. If it still shows offline, open the antenna enclosure and toggle the switch inside from Wi‑Fi to Wired and back — that clears the stored network and restarts pairing — then re-join it from the app. If it pairs and drops again within a day, the problem is signal strength or the antenna module itself.
What are the most common iAquaLink problems?
Three groups. Connection: a changed router, a new password, a network the antenna cannot see. Programming: a circuit renamed, a schedule left on the wrong season, a spa mode that lost its settings. Hardware: relays, actuators and sensors. The first two are frequently fixable remotely; the third is not.
Is the iAquaLink network down, or is it my system?
Walk to the pad and use the panel directly. If the buttons control the pool normally but the app cannot see it, the automation is fine and you have a connection problem. If the panel is unresponsive too, the fault is local and the app is only the messenger.
How do I connect my AquaLink to Wi-Fi?
Put the antenna into setup mode, join the temporary network it broadcasts from your phone, then hand it your home network and password. The detail that catches people out: these antennas join 2.4 GHz networks only. If your router or mesh publishes one combined name and steers devices onto 5 GHz, pairing fails without telling you why. Unusual characters in the password can stop it too.
Can you add pool automation to an existing pool?
Yes, and it is more common than automating a new build. The load centre goes in near the existing equipment, actuators sit on the diverter valves you already have, and the pump, heater and lights are wired into the relays. The effort depends on the pad: the electrical supply, and how much old time-clock wiring can stay.
How much does it cost to automate a pool?
It depends on how many circuits you want controlled, how many valves need actuators and what the electrics look like, so a firm figure sight unseen is a guess. Repairs are the same: an actuator is a modest job, a main board is not.
