The pump loses prime on a hillside install
Lift plus distance: a pad above the waterline pulls uphill through a suction line already near its limit. Add a dried-out lid o-ring and it pulls air instead of water, runs dry and cooks its seal.
Chlorine reads fine in the morning and zero by evening
Valley heat and unbalanced conditioner. Too little cyanuric acid and August burns the day's chlorine off by dinner; too much and it is present but chemically locked. A strip cannot tell you which.
The heater or salt cell quits before the pool is warm
Flow, not the appliance. Both refuse to fire below a minimum flow rate, and a long hillside run leaves far less headroom to lose. A loaded cartridge filter is enough to trip the switch.
The pool drinks water and nobody can say why
On a slope, evaporation and a leak look identical. A weeping line puts water into the hillside where nothing shows, and the autofill covers for it for months.
Why Sherman Oaks is different
Two pool towns, and Ventura is the line
South of Ventura the streets climb into the Santa Monica Mountains and the pools are cut into the hillside. The pad sits on its own terrace, joined to the water by a long pipe run with real vertical lift in it.
North toward Riverside Drive the lots are level and the pads are short-piped, so diagnosis is quick. What these pools get instead is heat: open, unshaded lots from June to September.
Access is stairs, gates and a carry rather than a driveway — and minutes are what a weekly price is made of.

When we bought our house in Sherman Oaks the pool hadn't been professionally inspected. Our home inspector only gave it a basic look. I found Pool Care LA and called to get a proper assessment. They came out and went through everything: tested the water chemistry, checked the Pentair pump and Hayward filter, looked at all the plumbing connections, cleaned the skimmer baskets and gave me a clear summary of the overall condition. For about four years I thought I was saving money by managing my own pool. I watched the YouTube videos, bought a decent test kit, and had a weekly routine. It was fine for the first couple of years. But somewhere along the way things started going sideways. I was constantly chasing chemistry numbers that wouldn't stabilize. My salt cell was running on high output all the time. I had a recurring algae problem on the pool steps every few weeks that I could never fully eliminate. The water never looked quite right. I kept thinking I just needed to adjust one more thing. Finally my wife convinced me to stop and call a professional. I called Pool Care LA and explained my situation. The technician was straightforward and not judgmental at all, just started testing methodically. What he found was essentially years of compounding minor errors. My cyanuric acid level was way too high from using stabilized chlorine tablets before I converted to saltwater, which I had never properly diluted out when I made the switch. My calcium hardness was elevated and starting to affect the plaster. My salt cell was working harder than it needed to because the stabilizer imbalance was reducing chlorine effectiveness. He walked me through each finding and showed me the actual numbers. The correction involved a partial drain and refill to bring the cyanuric acid down, followed by a full chemistry reset. They came out three times over two weeks to monitor progress and adjust. They also serviced the Hayward filter which had significant buildup, and corrected my Pentair pump settings which had been configured incorrectly for my pool size. Since then I have had Pool Care LA on weekly service. The water is cleaner and clearer than at any point in the past four years. My salt cell runs at normal output. The algae on the steps has not come back once. Been in our house on Dickens going on twelve years. Pool has the original ceramic tile from when it was built, late 80s, and after this past winter a few cracked around the waterline and one came off completely. Called around and these guys came out fast, looked at everything and gave me a honest quote before touching anything. They pulled the cracked tiles, matched the color pretty close to the originals and grouted everything clean. Didnt take more than half a day and you really cant tell where the old ones were. Does a hillside pool cost more to service than one on the flats?
Usually a little, and it is time rather than difficulty: stairs, a carry, a gate to unlock and a pad on its own level all add minutes, and minutes are what a weekly price is made of. Volume, tree load, a spa and whether chemicals are included move the number much further.
Why does my chlorine vanish by the weekend every August?
Two candidates needing opposite fixes. Low cyanuric acid means the sun destroys chlorine faster than you add it. High cyanuric acid — usually years of stabilized tablets in a floater — means it is there but bound and barely sanitising. Only a full test separates them.
My equipment sits a long way from the pool. Does that shorten its life?
It shortens the margin, not the life. A long run costs pressure, so anything with a minimum flow requirement has less room before it refuses to run. Kept clean and correctly programmed it lasts as long as it would anywhere; neglected, the first symptom is something switching itself off.
We are in escrow on a house here with a pool. What should we look at?
The pad, not the water — clear water only proves someone shocked it recently. Check the pump's age, whether the filter has been opened in the past year, whether the heater fires, and where the equipment sits relative to the pool.
How much does pool service cost in Sherman Oaks?
