Renovation

Pool remodeling in Los Angeles

A pool does not wear out all at once. Surface, tile, coping, deck and the equipment pad age on different clocks. Remodelling is deciding which of them is spent.

What gets done together, and why that is cheaper

  • New surface or replaster — the pool has to be empty.
  • Waterline tile replacement — empty, or below the tile line.
  • Coping replacement or repair — empty, because the top of the shell is under it.
  • Deck resurfacing — no drain, so it schedules around everything else.
  • Pump, heater, filter, salt system, automation and valves — no drain, any Tuesday.
  • Light and fixture replacement — water lowered, not emptied.

If the pool is already drained for a new surface, the tile and coping are within reach: one drain, one refill, one start-up instead of two of each. The logic runs the other way too — a sound shell with scaled tile is a tile job, and nobody resurfaces a good pool to retile it. Fresh plaster then goes onto the 28-day start-up.

There is no remodel price list, because the same phrase covers a band of tile and an entire shell. What we do publish in full is everything with a fixed rate — the cost page. The people who quote the work run the weekly route afterwards.

Pool Care LA is a trade name of R R Pools, California contractor licence #970493, classifications B (General Building) and C-53 (Swimming Pool), current to 29 February 2028, with a $25,000 bond through Jet Insurance. Check it on cslb.ca.gov before you talk to anybody, us included.

Seven parts, seven different clocks

Read the signs before anyone quotes you

Each part has its own working life and its own way of saying it is over.

  • A worn pool interior with surface wear and missing tiles

    The surface

Rough underfoot, aggregate showing, stains back days after a clean. The shortest-lived part.

    Pool resurfacing

  • An old waterline band before retiling

    Waterline tile

A calcium band that will not brush off, grout washed out of the joints, tiles loose or missing.

    Pool tiling

  • Old pool coping lifting away from the shell

Coping — the edge you sit on

It fails from underneath: cracks through a section, one piece higher than its neighbor, the deck joint opening.

    Pool coping

  • Cracked poolside paving around a pebble pool

    The deck around it

Cracking that runs rather than hairlines, a chalky coat, sections lifted by roots. No drain needed.

    Deck resurfacing

  • Checking the filter pressure on the equipment pad

    The equipment pad

The only part that costs money every month it is left alone. It can change on any Tuesday, pool full.

    Equipment we install

  • A pool lit after dark by underwater lights

    Lights

Halogen is dim, hot and expensive to run. A fixture that has taken on water is a fault, not a style choice.

    Pool light repair

  • A leak around a PVC pipe in a pool wall

    Plumbing and valves

Leaking unions, sticking valves, dead actuators — cheap parts inside an expensive inconvenience once new tile is in.

    Equipment repair

In the order that respects your money

How to decide what to change

At every tier, ask to be shown the failure on your own pool before you agree to it.

  • First, whatever leaks or has stopped working. Faults, not remodel items — they worsen whether or not the tile changes. The standard diagnosis is free inside our service area.
  • Second, whatever costs money every month it stays. Overwhelmingly an old single-speed pump: manufacturers put the saving at up to $1,100 a year against a variable-speed replacement.
  • Third, whatever only looks dated. A tile pattern from another era, a colour you have gone off, halogen where the neighbors have colour. Real reasons, just not urgent ones.

Bought a house in Beverly Hills with an older pool and honestly had no idea how to maintain it. The equipment was old and everything was confusing. They walked me through what needed to be done first and what could wait. No pressure. That was appreciated.Read in full

House is on Kenneth Road, built in 1978, pool original to the property. As far as I know the plaster had never been done since the house was built. By the time I called it was in rough shape. Worn through in several spots, rough patches on the steps you could feel underfoot, staining that nothing touched, and chemistry that my pool service could never stabilize no matter what they added. Pool Care LA came out and explained the chemistry issue immediately. A porous, degraded plaster surface affects water balance in ways that are almost impossible to compensate for with chemicals alone. That connection had never been explained to me by anyone. They checked the shell structurally before quoting anything. The shell was sound. Equipment was aging but functional. The plaster was the problem. Replastering took a few days. They handled prep, application and walked me through the startup protocol. Daily brushing for two weeks while the surface cures, chemistry will fluctuate during that period, some cloudiness early on is normal. Having that context upfront made the whole process much less stressful. They came back twice during curing without me having to ask. The finished pool looks like it belongs to a different house. Water is genuinely clean and clear. My pool service commented that the chemistry holds now in a way it never did before. Should have done it years ago.Read in full

Our pool is from 1993 and the plaster was completely original. We're off Reseda between Ventura and Oxnard and the pool gets a lot of use from the kids. By this past summer it was rough underfoot, stained no matter what we put in the water and just looked worn out. 😬 We asked about upgrading to pebble instead of replastering with white again. The tech walked us through the aggregate options without it feeling like a pitch. Colors, textures, what each feels like barefoot, how they hold up over time, what the maintenance differences are. We went with a dark gray pebble. 🪨 Work was done on the schedule they gave us. They explained the startup process step by step and came back during the first week to check on the curing. Pool looks genuinely great. 💙 We've used the backyard more in the last five months than the previous few years combined.Read in full

We bought the property four years ago. Pool was put in around 2001 by whoever owned it before us, pebble finish that had probably never been touched since. We're up off Bellagio. The surface had faded heavily and the mineral staining made the water look murky even when the chemistry was dialed in. A company we used early on looked at it and said we needed a full renovation, quoted us accordingly. Pool Care LA came out and did an actual assessment. They checked the shell condition, the existing surface, the tile, the equipment, the deck. Their read was that the shell was structurally solid and the equipment was aging but still serviceable. What was needed was a surface replacement and some targeted tile work. Not a tear-down. That distinction saved us a meaningful amount of money. They removed the old pebble finish and inspected the substrate underneath, which came back in good condition. We went with a quartz aggregate finish that works with the stone on the house. During removal they found a section of waterline tile where the adhesive behind the tiles had failed. That got handled as part of the same project. The startup phase after a new surface requires real attention and they managed it carefully. Daily brushing for the first two weeks, chemistry monitoring as the surface cured, several check-in visits. They responded quickly when I had questions. The finished pool is something we actually use every day now. The quartz finish gives the water a clarity the old faded pebble never had. If you've been told you need a full renovation on an older pool, get a second opinion before committing. The real scope of work might be considerably smaller than you've been quoted.Read in full

Came home from a two-week vacation and our pool was basically green. The previous company told us we needed to drain it, which sounded crazy. Pool Care LA came out, tested everything, explained what was happening and started the cleanup. Took a little time but now the water looks better than it has in years.Read in full

Questions people ask about remodelling a pool

How much does it cost to remodel a pool in California?

There is no useful average and we do not publish one: the phrase covers a band of replacement tile and a full shell, deck and pad in the same breath. Your figure depends on which parts are in scope, the areas, the finish, access and the pad — so we quote in writing, after looking.

Is it cheaper to remodel a pool or build a new one?

Remodelling, in almost every case: the expensive half of a pool is the half you keep. Excavation, shell, main plumbing and electrical supply all stay. Two exceptions — a shell with real structural failure, and a pool in the wrong place or shape for the garden you want.

Can you redesign an existing pool?

A great deal changes without touching the shell: surface and colour, waterline tile, coping, deck, lighting, the whole equipment pad. What is not refinishing is anything altering the structure — new steps or benches, a changed depth, a different outline, an added spa.

What time of year is best to resurface a pool?

Los Angeles has no freeze to work around, so there is no season for it. Two constraints remain: the pool is unusable through the wet stage and the start-up after it, and the work wants dry weather. The shoulder months either side of summer, then — a comfort, not a rule.

How much does it cost to replaster a 40,000 gallon pool?

Replastering is priced by the surface area of the shell and the finish chosen, not by gallons — two pools holding the same water can have different amounts of wall and floor. A 40,000-gallon pool is a large shell, so it sits at the top of any range.

Can you replace just the pool tile, or just the coping?

Yes. Scaled or loose waterline tile is a tile job; cracked or lifted coping is a coping job. Neither obliges you to resurface a sound shell. Both need the water below the tile line, so if the surface is also near its end, all three inside one drain saves paying twice.

What is the typical cost of resurfacing a pool in Los Angeles?

Resurfacing starts at $7,500 and most projects land between $10,000 and $20,000 — it is the one part of a remodel priced the same way every time, by the interior surface area of the shell and the finish that goes back on. What moves it within that band is set out on the resurfacing cost page. Tile, coping, deck and equipment are quoted separately, which is why a remodel has no single average.

Are you licensed, bonded and insured for this work?

California contractor licence #970493, held with the C-53 swimming pool classification the state requires for this work, a $25,000 bond and liability cover through The Hartford. The licence is public on cslb.ca.gov, and the number is worth checking there rather than taking from any website, ours included.
