Pool Light Repair in Los Angeles
A dead pool light is sometimes a bulb, sometimes a flooded fixture, and occasionally an electrical fault that should not wait.
The short answer. A dark pool light is not always a bulb. The same fixture can be a failed lamp, a flooded housing, a perished gasket or a damaged cord — and none of those look different from the deck.
If the GFCI trips when the light goes on, stop switching it on. Here is why.
What the symptom is telling you
People rarely call about a pool light in general. They call about one of these.
Nothing happens at all
Lamp, socket, cord, transformer, time clock or breaker — all identical from up here.
It flickers, or dies after a minute
Usually a connection, not a lamp: a corroding contact, a loose terminal, moisture getting in.
It trips the GFCI
Current is finding a path it should not have, typically water in the fixture or damaged cord insulation.
There is water inside the lens
The seal has gone: a gasket, a lamp and a reseal — or a housing past saving.
It works, but dim or yellow
Normal halogen ageing, and often scale on the lens rather than the lamp. Most people move to LED here.
Colours stuck or out of step
Colour fixtures advance by counting power interruptions, so one outage leaves two lights out of step.

A tripped GFCI is a message, not a fault to reset past
A ground-fault interrupter compares the current going out to the light with the current coming back. When they stop matching, some of it is leaving the circuit somewhere else — and around a pool, that can mean the water.
GFCI protection and bonding around pool lighting are standard electrical-safety practice for exactly this reason. The causes are physical, and visible once the fixture is out: water in the housing, a chafed cord at the niche, a corroded socket.
- Kill it at the breaker
Not just the wall switch, and leave it off until the fixture has been out.
- Do not open the fixture yourself
Line-voltage work in a wet environment, and the fault you are hunting is what makes it dangerous.

Instantly, or after minutes? Only with the light, or with the pump too?
No, the pool almost never has to be drained
This is the fear that keeps broken lights broken for whole summers, and it is not how the work is done.

The circuit is isolated
Off at the breaker and confirmed dead before anything is touched.

One screw comes out of the trim ring
That single fastener is usually all that holds the fixture in its niche.

The fixture comes out on its own cord
Pool lights are built with a loop of spare cord coiled in the conduit behind them. That slack lands the fixture on the deck, still connected, water untouched.

Opened, diagnosed, rebuilt, resealed
Lamp, socket, gasket, seal and cord entry finally visible, and the repair-or-replace call made with you looking at the same parts.
The exception: a failed conduit or damage behind the niche turns this into structural work — uncommon, and obvious once the fixture is out. Same rule as the rest of the equipment pad.
Halogen to LED, and what it buys
Most pool lights here are still halogen, so the question is which technology, not which bulb.
- A fraction of the power
A traditional pool lamp is a several-hundred-watt device. An LED of the same brightness draws a fraction of it.
- It stops being a consumable
Halogen is rated in the low thousands of hours, LED in tens of thousands.
- Less heat in a sealed housing
Heat ages gaskets, and a failed gasket is how water gets in.
Colour is the other reason people convert. Two lights in one pool should be the same product, or you get two whites.
Colour lights and the automation behind them
Colour LEDs have no data cable. They read power itself: cycling the circuit steps the fixture to the next colour. An outage therefore leaves two lights mismatched, or an automation button producing the wrong show.
The fix is resynchronising them with the sequence for that brand, then checking the controller is sending the right one. When the panel itself is at fault it becomes automation repair. We install and service Pentair and Jandy controls, so it stays one visit.
Four parts, four lifespans
The lamp is the part people think of. But gaskets go soonest, a worn cord is what usually explains a GFCI trip with a perfectly good lamp, and the niche should outlast all three.
How the visit goes
Nobody prices a pool light over the phone: until it is out of the wall, a dead lamp and a dead housing look the same. Then the choice is yours — lamp, seal, whole fixture or LED conversion — with the cost of each before anything is fitted.

Questions people ask about pool light repair
Can a pool light be repaired?
Often. Plenty come back with a lamp, a gasket and a cleaned-up socket. Replacement wins when the housing has corroded, the cord is damaged, or you are moving to LED.
Can I replace a pool light without draining the pool?
For a standard in-ground fixture that is the normal method — the spare cord in the conduit exists so the light can be worked on with the pool full.
Can I replace my pool light myself?
We would not encourage it, and this is the one part of pool care where we say so plainly. Changing a lamp is not the risky part; judging whether the rest is safe to re-energise is.
Do electricians replace pool lights, or do you need one?
Both trades touch this. Pool companies handle the fixture, the niche and the run to the junction box; an electrician is right when the fault is upstream, in the panel or house wiring.
How much does it cost to fix or replace a pool light?

Ask about the part, not the light. A halogen lamp lasts a season or two of evening use, an LED tens of thousands of hours, and the gasket usually goes before either.
