Pool Pump Repair in Los Angeles
Loud, leaking, not priming, tripping the breaker or simply dead — and an honest answer on whether repairing beats replacing.
The short answer. Most “the pump is broken” calls are one of six things: a worn shaft seal, failed bearings, a jammed impeller, a dead start capacitor, a suction-side air leak, or no pump fault at all — a blocked basket starving it of water. Four of the six are repairs.
We diagnose before we quote. If it is the motor, California’s efficiency rules decide what replaces it — read that first.
Start with what the pump is doing
A pump tells you what is wrong before it stops. The noise, where the water is, and whether the basket fills narrow it to one part.

A pump running dry can melt its own wet end in under an hour, which turns a seal kit into a new pump. A new noise means switch it off at the breaker.

In the order things are cheapest to be wrong, not the order they are easiest to sell.
Power and controls
Breaker, time clock, relay, automation schedule, keypad. A surprising number of dead pumps were told to be off.
The water path
Pool level, both baskets, valves, filter pressure. Half of everything reported as a pump problem is a flow problem the pump is only reporting.
The wet end
Lid and O-ring, impeller, diffuser, shaft seal, unions. Where the repairable parts live.
The motor
Bearings by hand and under load, capacitor, windings, and whether water has reached the back of it.

Repair or replace
The question is not how old the pump is. It is which half of it failed.
- Repair: the wet end
Seal, lid and O-rings, impeller, diffuser, unions. Wear parts, inexpensive, meant to be replaced. Swapping a whole pump because one went throws away a working motor.
- Repair: single electrical faults
A start capacitor on a sound motor is a repair. So is a relay, a time clock or a wiring fault.
- Replace: the motor
Bearings gone, windings shorted, or water inside the housing. Rebuilding suits a large pump; on a standard residential one the arithmetic rarely supports it.
- Replace: a cracked housing
A split volute or strainer pot should not be holding pressure beside the house.
How long a pump lasts
Life is counted in running hours, not birthdays. The figure quoted across the trade is roughly eight to twelve years, and Los Angeles pools reach it sooner: there is no closed season here, so ours run twelve months while a pump in a seasonal climate sleeps for four.
Two things shorten it faster than age — running against a dirty filter, and running with a leaking shaft seal. Both show on a weekly visit and are invisible the rest of the time.

California rules
If the motor is replaced, it will be variable speed
Not an upsell, and not our policy. Under California’s Appliance Efficiency Regulations, replacement dedicated-purpose pool pump motors of 0.5 total horsepower and above, manufactured on or after 19 July 2021, must be variable-speed. The standard is Title 20 of the California Code of Regulations, section 1605.3(g)(6), and it governs what may be sold in the state.
A like-for-like single-speed swap is therefore not something anyone can legally supply at those sizes. If the motor is dead, the replacement is variable speed. If the seal went and the motor is fine, none of this applies.

What it changes about the bill
It costs more on the day and less every month after. A pool does not need full speed to filter, it needs turnover, and turnover at low speed uses a fraction of the power. For the Pentair IntelliFlo, manufacturers put the saving at up to $1,100 a year against a standard pump — their figure, not ours.

Before we get there
- Switch it off at the breaker
If it screeches, roars, hums without moving water, runs hot, or smells of burnt insulation.
- Stop resetting a tripping breaker
Resetting it asks a motor with water in it to try again.
- Top the water to mid-skimmer, empty the baskets
If the noise stops, that was the whole fault.
- Photograph the nameplate
Make, model, horsepower and service factor tell us whether the part is on the van.
- Note where the water is coming from
Under the motor, at the lid, or at a union — three faults, three parts.

Questions people ask before they call
How much does it cost to fix a pool pump?
It splits in two. Wet-end repairs — seal, O-rings, impeller, capacitor — are the low end: cheap parts, an hour or two of work. A motor is several times that, a whole pump more again. A firm number over the phone is the expensive outcome quoted to be safe. How our one-time work is priced.
Is it worth repairing a pool pump?
Usually yes, when a wear part failed — seals, O-rings, impellers, unions and capacitors cost a fraction of a pump and are meant to be replaced. It stops being worth it when the motor has gone on an old pump, the housing is cracked, or the same pump has had two repairs inside a year.
What is the average lifespan of a pool pump?
Roughly eight to twelve years is the figure quoted across the trade, but it is really a running-hours number. Los Angeles pools run year round, so they get there faster than pools in climates that shut down for winter.
Can a plumber fix a pool pump?
A plumber handles the plumbing around it — a cracked pipe, a union, a valve. A pump failure usually needs the other two trades: the electrical side of a motor, and the pool-specific wet end. Add California’s rules on replacement motors and it stops being a plumbing job.
Why is my pool pump so loud all of a sudden?
Listen to which noise it is. A squeal that worsens as the motor heats up is bearings. A roar or gravel rattle is cavitation — check pool level, baskets and valves first. A hum with no water moving is a jammed impeller or a dead capacitor. Only the first is expensive.
What are the signs of a failing pool pump?
Water on the pad under the motor, a changed noise, air in the basket or returns, prime lost overnight, a breaker that trips twice, weak flow, or a motor too hot to touch. One is a reason to look; two together, to switch it off.
What would cause a pool pump to lose its prime?
Air on the suction side. The lid O-ring is the most common cause by a wide margin, then drain plugs, union O-rings and valve stems. The rest is not enough water: a level below mid-skimmer, a packed basket, or a valve left half shut.
Do I have to replace a single-speed pump with a variable speed one in California?
Not while it works. The rules govern what can be sold: replacement dedicated-purpose pool pump motors of 0.5 total horsepower and above made on or after 19 July 2021 must be variable-speed, under Title 20 of the California Code of Regulations, section 1605.3(g)(6).
