Pool tiling · Eagle Rock
An aging painted concrete pool and spa, converted to a pale blue ceramic interior with a deeper blue band inside the spa and sandstone carried down into the water.
Tile was chosen for the reason most people choose it: it does not need doing again in eight years.
Before and after
The stripped shell and the finished interior, from the same corner of the yard.

A father-and-son project
The pool dated from the early eighties and had been painted more than once. The owner wanted it usable again for grandchildren, and after looking at the options chose a fully tiled interior.
It was a large job with a lot of detail — the spa was enlarged as part of it, which meant structural work before any finish went on.
From painted to fully tiled
Converting an old painted pool into a tiled one is far more than swapping the surface.
The failing paint was stripped back as far as it would come, loose waterline tile was removed, and the walls were rendered flat before anything was laid.
A fern had rooted between the steps and the shell — small, and a direct route for water into the structure, so it was cut out and the area repaired.
Carrying sandstone below the waterline needed extra work. Natural stone is porous, so it was sealed several times and bedded with a high-strength adhesive rated for permanent immersion.
Ordinary paving sandstone would absorb water, stain and eventually spall. It is a different product and a different price.
