A neglected concrete pool backing onto open ground: cleaned out, repaired and resurfaced in a bright ultra-smooth pebble, with the original brick coping saved and re-laid.

This pool's story
The property backs onto open ground and local birds had made the pool part of their routine. With maintenance slipping at the same time, the water and the surface under it were badly affected by algae and organic contamination.
Ground movement had also loosened the brick coping. The surrounding concrete had been poured hard against it with no expansion joint, so seasonal movement pushed straight at the pool edge, lifting bricks and damaging the band underneath.
Rather than replacing everything, the existing bricks were lifted carefully, cleaned back where needed and re-laid on a high-strength flexible adhesive. The damaged waterline tile came off, the render behind it was repaired, and the band was retiled.
Preparation before the new finish
A pebble interior depends on what is under it, not on the color you see once the pool is full.
Brick coping saved and re-laid. Most of the bricks came off in sections, were cleaned back and re-laid on flexible adhesive. Re-grouting was done only where the joints actually needed it.
Waterline and step-edge tiles renewed. Movement had wrecked the old waterline. The tile came off, the render behind it was repaired and brought flat, and the band was retiled in warm terracotta with gray grout.
Hollow areas removed before resurfacing. After repeated cleaning, the hollow and failed areas of the original plaster were cut out, and a scratch coat gave the new surface something consistent to bond to.
The scratch coat is the first thing to disappear from a quote that is cheaper than the others.

Cleaning was only the start. The hollow plaster came out, the coping was lifted and re-laid, and the interior went on over a proper scratch coat.
