A pool left empty for five years, repaired and repainted
The pump was dead, the equipment had a leak, calcium had hardened around the tile, and the interior needed repair before it could be painted at all.

Empty for five years
Why this needed more than a coat of paint
A pool left empty for years is exposed to sun, rain, temperature swing and dirt instead of sitting protected under water. Empty is harder on a shell than full.
Over that long a period an old coating fades, chalks, goes brittle and starts letting go. Calcium hardens around the tile, existing cracks open up, and every earlier repair becomes visible.
Here the pump was not running and there was a leak in the equipment. The interior needed substantial work before painting, and the tile and coping needed restoring at the same time.
The interior was finished in a deep blue epoxy. The final look changes once it is filled — depth, daylight and the sky over it all shift the color, which is why a dry sample tells you so little.

Can an old concrete pool just be repainted?
Only after the repairs. Epoxy is a few thousandths of an inch thick and bridges nothing, so it follows the surface underneath it. The repair, the cleaning and the preparation matter every bit as much as the color on the tin.
Is standing a pool empty safer than leaving it full?
No, the opposite. Empty, the shell takes sun, rain and temperature swing directly instead of sitting protected under water, and an old coating chalks, goes brittle and starts letting go.
Will the colour look like the sample?
Not exactly. A dry pool shows you the paint; a full one shows you depth, daylight and the sky reflected in it. The same deep blue reads differently once the water is in.
