Underwater bar stools and a smooth pebble interior
A resurfacing job that also changed how the pool gets used: a new pebble interior, a new waterline band, tiled step edges and three concrete bar stools built into the shell.
Resurfacing first, entertaining second — but decided together, because the shell only opens once.

A resurfacing job with a second purpose
The stools get the attention, but the real work here was the shell: stripping the old interior, sounding out what was underneath and resurfacing the whole pool.
Most people still picture the pebble finishes of twenty years ago — hard on feet and hard to clean. Modern pebble is finished far smoother while keeping the durability, which is why it holds up better than plaster in water as hard as ours.
The waterline band was replaced at the same time and the step edges tiled, so the job reads as finished rather than half-done. Doing the band separately later means opening the same edge twice.

Three things happened in one visit: a repair, a finish upgrade and a change to how the family uses the pool.

Anything set in afterwards creates a joint between two materials that expand at different rates, permanently under water.
Three stools poured into the concrete shell. They were formed as part of the shell, tied into its reinforcement, and finished in the same surface as the pool.
Shallow-end coping and deck extended to make the bar. The coping and deck on the shallow side were extended about two feet to create the arm rest and bar top. That is what turns three stools into a bar.
Finishes chosen to balance durability and detail. The waterline was retiled, the step and stool edges tiled, the coping finished in bluestone, and the stool tops set in flamed black granite for grip when wet.
Height is the one decision that cannot be changed later — get it two inches wrong and the seats go unused.
