Fully tiled pool and spa in Druid Gray

A neglected concrete pool and spa restored in dark gray tile with granite coping, the steps and spa seat squared up, new LED lights and renewed equipment.

The tile is only as precise as what is under it.

A complete pool renovation

The tiling finish started beneath the tiles

The new owners inherited a pool that had been left for years. The equipment was dead, the shell had rust coming through, and nothing about it was going to improve on its own.

The steps and spa seat were also out of square — wider at one end than the other by enough to see. Before any tile, the pool was emptied, cleaned out and those errors corrected in render.

Fixing the structure first is what lets the tile go on with clean lines and consistent cuts. A small-format tile on an out-of-square surface produces a visibly tapering joint line, and there is no fixing it afterwards.

While the surrounds were being re-concreted, new conduit and wiring went in for LED lights, and the equipment was renewed. Doing that while the deck was open cost a fraction of what it would have cost afterwards.

Tile does not hide a crooked step; it points at it.

Pool tiling in La Cañada Flintridge

A permanent interior for an older pool

In an established yard a pool renovation has to feel deliberate rather than temporary, which is most of the argument for tile.

A fully tiled interior suits older pools particularly well, because getting there forces someone to inspect and correct the shell before the finish goes on. That inspection is worth as much as the tile.

The dark gray tile reads almost charcoal dry and soft blue once filled. Granite coping finished the edge and tied the pool into the rebuilt yard.

Steps squared up, then dark gray tile

The owners inherited a pool left for years: dead equipment, rust through the shell, and steps and a spa seat out of square. All of it was dealt with before any tile went on.

What went into the job

  • Pool emptied and cleaned out
  • Rust coming through the shell dealt with
  • Steps and spa seat squared up in render
  • Interior tiled in dark gray across pool and spa
  • Granite coping laid around the edge
  • New conduit, wiring and LED lights while the deck was open

The result

A dark gray tiled interior that reads soft blue once filled, granite coping, square steps and equipment that works — with the deck opened once instead of twice.

This week on the job

Straight from the truck

Short clips from real visits. Nothing staged, nothing bought from a stock library.

  • Setting mosaic tile along the waterline by hand
  • Draining a pool and scrubbing the plaster back to clean
  • A swamp-green pool drained and washed back to bright
  • The crew troweling fresh plaster across an empty shell

Came home from a two-week vacation and our pool was basically green. The previous company told us we needed to drain it, which sounded crazy. Pool Care LA came out, tested everything, explained what was happening and started the cleanup. Took a little time but now the water looks better than it has in years.Read in full

We had another pool company for almost five years and slowly the service got worse. They would say they came but the pool was always dirty. Jake from Pool Care LA has been completely different. He actually checks the equipment and lets us know if something needs attention.Read in full

Our pump stopped working on a Friday afternoon and we were worried because we had family coming over that weekend. Robert came out, found the problem and got everything running again. Honest guy, and he explained everything before doing the repair.Read in full

I don't usually leave reviews but these guys deserve it. My pool was a mess and I was tired of trying to fix the chemicals myself. They came out and took care of everything. Water is clear now and I don't have to worry anymore.Read in full

Bought a house in Beverly Hills with an older pool and honestly had no idea how to maintain it. The equipment was old and everything was confusing. They walked me through what needed to be done first and what could wait. No pressure. That was appreciated.Read in full

We thought we needed a completely new pool system. Turns out it was just a few issues with the pump and filter. They saved us a lot of money by fixing what actually needed fixing.

What this La Cañada Flintridge job shows

Can tile go straight over an old pool surface?

No. Tile does not hide a crooked step; it points at it. A small-format tile on an out-of-square surface produces a visibly tapering joint line, and there is no fixing it afterwards.

Why correct steps and a spa seat before tiling?

Because on this pool they were out of square — wider at one end than the other by enough to see. Correcting that in render first is what lets the tile go on with clean lines and consistent cuts.

Why renew lighting and equipment at the same time?

Because the deck was already open. New conduit and wiring for LED lights went in while the surrounds were being re-concreted, at a fraction of what the same work costs once everything is closed up.
