Alhambra pools are smaller than the foothill ones, older than most of Los Angeles, and they sit in the hottest air in the San Gabriel Valley. All three of those work against the water at once.
Small volume is the part people underrate. A 12,000-gallon pool in a tight 91801 back yard has less water to absorb a mistake than a 30,000-gallon pool on an acre. Valley heat burns free chlorine off the surface, and a smaller body of water swings further and faster when it does. What looks like a chemical problem is usually a size-and-climate problem managed as if the pool were twice as big.
Age is the other half. Many pools here were built decades ago: original plumbing, a shell already resurfaced once or twice, and equipment squeezed into a side yard never designed to hold it.
What goes wrong on Alhambra pools
Four patterns, and none of them are about the owner being careless.
- Chlorine gone by the end of the week in July
Valley heat plus sun plus a small pool. The lever is stabiliser, not more chlorine — which is why cyanuric acid is on the weekly panel we read at every visit.
- Stabiliser that has crept too high over the years
Stabilised tablets add cyanuric acid every time, and it never evaporates. Years later the same chlorine reading does far less work, and the only real fix is replacing water. Nobody sees it coming without a weekly number to look at.
- Old equipment in a side yard with no air around it
Heaters need clearance to breathe. Pushed against a fence between the house and the property line, they short-cycle, overheat and throw codes that look like a failed part. Pool heater repair.
- Plaster that is close to the end of its life
An acid wash removes a layer of surface, so it needs roughly half an inch of plaster left to work with. On an older Alhambra shell that has already been washed twice, the honest answer is sometimes that it should not be washed again.

Green to clean
Common on inherited and rented houses here. The pool is recovered without draining and is usually swimmable in about two days.

Pumps, heaters, filters, salt systems, plumbing, lights and time clocks. Older pads get diagnosed before anything is replaced.
Acid wash
Drained and washed at 50/50 acid to water. We check what the shell has left before recommending it, because on an old pool the answer can be no.

How the Alhambra route runs
Alhambra is dense, so the run is tight: many pools within a few blocks, all on one fixed weekday. That works in your favour — the gate arrangement is settled and readings land on a clean seven-day interval. One visit a week is standard all year; two makes sense mainly through high summer on a heavily used pool. Ask which day the Alhambra run has open.

Questions we get from Alhambra
Why does my chlorine disappear by the end of the week in summer?
Sun and heat destroy free chlorine, and a small pool has less water to spread the loss across. Adding more chlorine treats the symptom; the stabiliser level decides how fast it burns off, so that is the number to look at first.
My pool is from the 1960s. Is an acid wash still an option?
Only if there is enough plaster left. An acid wash takes a layer off, and we look for about half an inch of reserve first. On a shell already washed twice, another wash buys a season and costs you the surface. Resurfacing is the better spend.
Is a small pool cheaper to service?
Somewhat. Chemical cost follows gallons, so a small pool saves there. Labour follows surface area and access, so it saves less than you would think, and a tight side yard with a locked gate can put the time straight back.
My equipment is jammed into a narrow side yard. Does that matter?
For the pump, not much. For the heater, a great deal — it needs clearance and airflow, and one boxed in by a fence runs hot and fails early. Worth knowing before you buy a new heater to sit in the same spot.
